Willy loves his jeep but every now and then he wants to drive something else. He's had an eye on one of these big Traxxas brutes for a while so we took a punt on ebay and acquired this. It was purple, well-used and filthy!! He says he'll cover half the cost but I'm still waiting!! ;)

It wasn't until after we bought it that we discovered there are two basic types of E Maxx, the modern 3903/3908 and the older, short wheelbase, narrow track 3906. Of course, this is a 3906! :(

But it was fairly cheap and by the time we sold the bits we didn't want it was even cheaper. Then we set about rebuilding and upgrading.

It now has wide 3903 spec suspension arms and the much beefier knuckles, diffs and drive-shafts, including the centre shafts. The gearbox was a 2-speed but it's now a single speed with modern internals except the final gear and shaft - it would need the newer case to fit the final gear. We were able to fit the Revo-spec slipper though. We decided the RPM true-track conversion was a worthwhile investment and some GPM alloy bulkheads add a nice bling factor. The EVX ESC didn't like 4S power so we grabbed an EVX-2 from TCer Frenchsub. A 2.4GHz Flysky radio, high torque servo, stainless hardware, home-made aluminium centre skid and a spare TXT-1 body completed the rebuild.

Willy looks quite at home in his new ride and we're quite impressed with the performance of our 3906-and-a-half, especially when considering it's cost us around half the price of a new (brushed) Maxx :)

Maybe too impressed though - my eldest daughter has started dropping hints about a 3908 - the LWB brushless monstrosity. I've started buying bits, watch this space...

Cheers,

Rob

You can never go wrong with an E-maxx. I love this platform, and have been customising 10-15 E-maxx's the past decade.

You can easily upgrade this one to the 3903/3908 spec, by just changing the chassis/transmission, which can be found very cheap on the bay. Then just take it from there when things break. All of a sudden you find your self addicted in the Maxxworld with full upgraded Supermaxx/Gorillamaxx trucks.

The E-maxx is almost like the Tamiya addiction. All the cool stuff isn't available anymore, so crazy expensive on Ebay, or being at a forum like this with dedicated Maxx addicts. If you don't want to get cought by the Maxx bug, stay away from [Click here]

E-maxx's are great, I wouldn't be without mine. Brushless is the way forward with these.

@ Klausen - yeah I've seen some of the UE stuff around. Very nice but out of my price range. I can see how people get the bug with these though, amazing how cheap some parts are if you shop around.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Dave, you're right, a nice tough basher was the idea. Really it's a step up for my kids, faster than the TXT but not as mental as my Revo. And not as delicate as a WW2 - we almost destroyed the front end of the red WW2 when it got clipped by the Revo, dread to think what a high speed collision would have done
And yes, of course Willy's on the correct side
