Awhile back I picked up both Kyosho Optima and Ultima rollers to restore. I ordered up bodies and decals for both as well as tires for the Optima and then they've been untouched for the past several years. Since I've been lightening my projects backlog I've been able to work on some of the ones I am most interested in - a couple of which being the Optima and Ultima.

I recently set out hunting down parts for both and have uncovered some troves but focused mostly on the Ultima so far. Although for both cars I've been hunting down reasonably priced box art wheels - which are not an easy score by a long shot. Both are available NIP on ebay but for more than I paid for either project cars and I just didn't want to plunk down that much cash just for the wheels (more than Bigwig wheels, which I thought were the benchmark for expensive wheels).

Anyway - a week or two ago while trawling ebay for Kyosho parts I stumbled on a second Optima parts car that - miracle of miracles - was fitted with almost new box-art wheels. It also happened to have a bunch of the parts I had already flagged as needing to complete my other chassis, such as the front piece that supports the nose plate and bumper. It was listed for $100 BIN or best offer. I put in an offer for $80 and the seller accepted! The NIP wheels alone are going for $88 minimum, so I got my wheels, by nose brace, nicer shocks, most chassis parts in better condition plus an MSC / driver post / etc, etc. Good deal.

The bodies that came with both rollers are going to go into a parts lot along with the bits from both rollers I decide not to use, which will probably recoup the cost of the second roller. The body and decals are about to make their way to my buddy and TCer Mincemeat who's done a few bodies for me in the past and is going to take a stab at a nice box art finish. I'm super excited to see how it turns out.

In the mean time, I mounted the new tires on the 'new' wheels and consolidated some of the better parts onto the chassis that had the working drive-train. Pictures below. Am excited to see how it turns out. Will post pics of the Ultima soon as well.

First roller on left, second on right. New chassis came with nice, original wheels. Old chassis had chain and diffs all in good shape. After consolidating some parts onto one chassis. With the original body - already looking good!

I did not know you liked Kyosho buggies so much, Ben. I know those motors are awesome by the way. I hope you will finish that bodyshell, as it looks promising.

Yep! Guilty as charged. Well, within limits. I'm really only interested in the original Optima, original Ultima, the Pegasus / Cosmo / Icarus / Bandido variants and the Mini Z and die cast versions of the above (which currently is limited to the Mini Z Optima and die cast versions). I'm also considering getting a NIB Tomahawk re-re but still undecided. I only plan to 'collect' a small few re-re NIBs, so if the Tomahawk is one I'd just decide to sell anyway to make room for say an Ultima re-re then I won't bother. Then again, I will have a vintage Ultima shelfer soon. Classic 'first world problem'.

Haha. Wait til you run one of these incredible Honda bikes, Ben. They go like nothing you can imagine! I'm now looking for some action pictures from a few months ago. Anyway, it's nice to know you're also working Kyoshos now.

Hi Ben, I've done a few Optima's over the last few years, if you get bored send them over the pond! Should get the Hotshot in the next couple of days too. Thanks again for the trade. All the best, Lee.

Thanks guys! Yeah am really excited to finish this one. Will post up the Ultima too once I've had a chance to work on it a bit. Still missing a few key bits - most notably wheels. Currently I'm leaning toward an alloy set... but would still prefer original if I can find for an affordable price.

Looks really good there Ben, I don't know if the Kyosho bug will bite me, but it could some day.

I like the black body on that final chassis combo. Amazing that Kyosho actually molded lug nuts on their wheels, I don't think Tamiya did that in the same era.

Chris - the Kyosho bug has already bitten you. The symptoms may take some time to manifest.

Another convert! Got my Gallop done and the Dash-9 is close. Too bad parts are so darn expensive but they are mostly gone. Love them both!

Great work!! Any chance you would let that 240S go?? That is the only thing I need for my Turbo Optima restoration project, lol.

Thanks guys! Yeah, some of the Kyosho parts are really tough to track down. I actually had the idea to look on Kyosho's US website and found they were selling re-re versions of the original front Ultima tires as an option for the Scorpion so I grabbed a set at a great price. Worth a look! and @emspjay obviously am using it on this project, but I do have a green Le Mans 480T in VG condition I'd sell for a good deal if you'd be interested.

I don't blame you for wanting to hold onto that 240S!! The 480 looks great but I really want the 240S. If you see another one for sale let me know!
