Beefmuffin's First RC10... this one's a runner!
Well, technically my first RC10 was a NIB re-release that I sold to Mincemeat a while back. I actually kind of regret selling it... unless Stefan still has it, then I'm happy a buddy has it! I picked this one up intending to restore it with a new re-re chassis and a bunch of other new vintage and re-re parts but have decided instead to run it as-is (after a little light restoration).
I bought the body and wing finished by someone else - not sure if original or re-re, but it's definitely not mint so it's really ideal for a nice box-art-ish runner. I'm not a huge fan of all the purple dye used on the nylon parts but... it's a runner after all. Threw in a green Trinity Speed Gem motor I had laying around and a TEU-104BK ESC (not my favorite but it'll do). The ESC choice is also good because it has a receiver battery lead and I decided to break open a NIB vintage Futaba Attack III radio set for this to get the real vintage experience (sort of).
I haven't touched the gear box, which has an aftermarket 48 pitch Robinson spur gear mounted, and according to Unclepunchy it might have Thorpe internals. Luckily had a suitable pinion among my used pinions. I got a deal on a massive 5,200mAh NiMH battery for R/C boats (LOL) and it doesn't fit in most of my runners well but figured it'd be perfect for this. Just had to remove the battery bracket, use some servo mounting tape on the battery itself, and it fits snugly between the steering servo and rear bulkhead.
It's all blizzardy here in NJ today so still waiting to take this for a spin outside!

Grumpy pants
Quality piece of kit. Very nice.
beefmuffin
Thanks Mr. Pants! I forgot to mention that the wheels are the originals, rear tires are vintage 'Made in Italy' ones (don't know brand - anyone?) and fronts are re-re Kyoshos.
Klausen
Great looking RC10. Cool with the Trinity motor.
beefmuffin
Thanks Mr. Pickles (sorry - you know about Klausen pickles right?)!
emspjay
Very nice I also Like the vintage RC10's
Klausen
nope but I do now. Guess you gonna add that name to your product, to make it a succes
Crash Cramer
Ah the made in Italy tires, anyone's guess really. I had some here and they split on the sidewall and I didn't even get to turn them once in anger on the track or asphalt, so good luck with those.
beefmuffin
@Klausen LOL well they are my favorite pickles, although checking I now realize they are spelled Claussen (I would have sworn up and down the spelling was with a K!); @ChrisCramer hmm well hope they give me a few runs! I have a set of matching Kyosho re-re rears on their way which I hope will fit snuggly with the rear 3-piece wheels (the fronts are a little loose, but not too big an issue for front tires); @MSPJ Thanks - can't wait to actually run it!
MAD-BEE
Crikey! Hey Ben how's you, mate would absolutely love one of these especially to use as a runner! What a Buggy!!! Yours looks great!👍
Crash Cramer
Well, I could always dig around here and see if I have some 1.9 tires for ya. May not match, but they will be vintage.
R/CVET
Looks awesome....nice work! I never had an interest in these as a kid but became curious when the re-re came out and waited 4 months for my pre-ordered re-re classic that still sits NIB. With all the snow that just hammered us in New Jersey my attention is focused on my scale 4x4 truck but I will get to the RC10 sooner or later.
beefmuffin
@Mr-BEE Thanks buddy - doing OK! You ever fly that chopper of yours?? @Crash Thanks dude but if the Scorpion rear tires don't work out I'll just get some re-re RC10 ones... that was the plan originally but had both sets of these tires on hand.
beefmuffin
@R/CVET Yeah man - little bit of snow, right? LOL. My dad owned a hobby shop in the 80's which is where I was introduced to Tamiya and I remember around the end of its run is when I started hearing about these metal RC10 buggies that were all the rage - around when the Bigwig was popular too. I remember watching Bigwig promos and reading about RC10 in the shop on the same day I think. But never had much interest till well into my retro obsession... but then I had to have one. Like with a lot of non-Tamiya classics, it's just the original I care about - none of the subsequent versions spark my interest much at all. Only thing I still need to do is mount the lights on this!
