Toyota Hilux vintage runner project
A long term restauration finally has come to an end. I got this Hilux roughly 2 years ago. Although the overall condition was not bad at all, i took the chassis back to the bone into pieces. Same with the body ,that needed to be stripped from loads of coating and paint. While the body took a loong bath in DOT4 brakefluid, i had to think about my plans with this car.
Usually, i’m one of these typical boring «shelf queen collectors» who rebuilds cars only for display purposes. But i knew, whenever i get my hands on a Hilux, i will go the extra way and make a full restauration runner😊.
Meanwhile, i aquired also a new unused Acoms AP427 transmitter, so i decided to get this thing not only into a complete running state, but also with correct period radio. The original big power horse (4000mAmps) has come together with the car and the transistorized ESC is still going strong, so should not be too much effort to achieve my plans. But i was soon proven wrong.
Because the Acoms AP427 set was missing the correct receiver, and to find the correct ARA427 is next to impossible, i had to search for another solution. Finally i found another vintage receiver- Futaba AM27 4-channel-that is working well together with the acoms radio. Only problem- two of the 4 channel servo throws are reversed- and the good old AP427 is lacking any reversing switches! So, to get this issue fixed, i had to reverse the wiring of the pots in the radio first. After this, i realized that the original battery connectors of the 4000Nicad pack does not fit with the usual 7.2V tamiya connector because it is slightly different ! Aaargh !! But this was easily done by the use of an adapter.
However- at the end i am very happy that i finally have this truck running. All works great and almost everything is original and in very good shape. Only modern parts that i had to use is a repro decalsheet and some screws & nuts. It’s all about vintage😊
Thanks for looking
Mike
