I've been racing with my son this summer. We've been having problems finding suitable race cars. He's been using his Traxxas Stampede and I have been running various cars, including a Madcap, Losi XX4, Traxxas Eagle and TA02 Chevy S-10.

Surprisingly, the most successful so far has been the S-10, due to it's low speed and the fact that the track is a bit small. Once I get the bugs (crash damage) worked out (and turn the AVT down a bit), I'm going to continue using the XX4.

My son has been having considerable problems with the Stampede. When I drive it, I can see why. It turns way too sharply, even with crummy front tires. The radio he uses does not have servo throw limiters, so he always gets the max turn. Plus, we've been using the Stampede only on race day, and it's really a waste not to run this car in the street and bash it. That's what the Pede does best.

So I bought this one. It was only $36(US) and was complete, minus electonics and motor.

We brought it to the track once for practice and it was great. I'm still working out which ESC and motor to use, but the jumping and handling are superb.

What else can I say. This, and my XX4, are pure race cars. They have no personality or character like you would find in even the most bland tamiya car. It's only purpose is to get around a race track quickly. No fun to just run down the street.

Update July 20 2004. My son raced this buggy last season. It ran great for him and he did pretty well in his Novice racing class. However, he really wanted a Stadium Truck for racing. He likes the way they look, and I know they are easier to drive. So I got him a Rustler and he loves it.

I normally race my Losi XX4. It broke last week, and the parts are on order, so I was without a ride this weekend at the race track. My son still has this nice Graphite nearly-new buggy. Hmm. So I showed up this weekend at the track with a car I borrowed from a 6 year old. I did stick my 11t motor and ESC in there and let it rip. What a blast! So fast & smooth. Handles great. I really had a great time with it. I did rip the body in 1 place though, maybe he won't notice :)
