Just a quick showroom update to illustrate the latest modifications to this Land Rover Defender 90 scale crawler build.

February 2019 - showroom update:

Status: update of existing new-build

Name: OK TC

Chassis: 4-link Trailfinder/Gelande copy

Body: Land Rover D90 CSW chopped to truck-cab

The latest modifications include fitting a stronger (20Kg) steering servo, and the addition of a winch-bumper and scale Warn 9.5CTi winch, which required some significant changes to the original snub-nose grille and headlight assembly I'd created.

In an effort to minimise the front overhang, I cut as much of the winch bumper away as I could, creating a profile that follows the front of the chassis rails, and the bumper itself is mounted/sandwiched using the four bolts that secure the winch to the front chassis cross member.

In order to make everything fit, the original [US/air-conditioning style] radiator panel was removed (and the bonnet given a new UK style leading edge), while the engine bay was also shortened by approximately 5mm to give more room for the winch.

The original Land Rover headlight surrounds were replaced by a simple panel and working running-lights/indicators (these are Axial 5mm spot-light housings, with the original Defender orange Lucas style lenses glued on). I then modified the bull-bar section of the winch-bumper, adding a pair of metal tabs to locate a pair of 18mm Axial spot-lights as replacements for the headlights.

Other visual and scale detail updates include replacing the original [foil covered] plastic checker-plate cappings on the rear wheel-arch boxes with some real aluminium versions, and I added a panel to the centre of the bonnet too. I also updated/added some more scale detailing in the load-bed - real [old engine] oil soaked rags in the milk crate, and some subtile decals on the rear window and tailgate.

There is more detailed information about all these latest modifications in a dedicated thread in the Builds section of the forum. JM

Your body detailing with the weathering techniques is simply amazing!

Almost nothing of the original front end remains, nevertheless imediately recognisable as a defender. Very nice detailing!

This is just seriously cool, the more I look at it the more I like it!

Hi Tamiyastef - yes, one of the things I wanted to try and retain was the 'face' I'd created on the previous incarnation (see part 1) using the original headlight surrounds - this is why I ultimately went for a pair of round spot lights (the same diameter as the original headlights) and kept the original Lucas indicators as side-lights in a similar position - I'm glad it worked!

Nice, the Defender is getting better and better.

Absolutely stunning. Brings back great memories, as despite loving my Tamiyas at aged 15. My first real car was a LR SWB SERIES III and the second being a LR 90. Both with Weber wheels and too many upgrades. They would go anywhere.

Jenny,
Could you tell me what type of paint you use on your creations? Are you using acrylic or enamel? Curious....really love your work!

Hi Mr Duke - for the bodywork I tend to use regular rattle-can primer and paint from Halfords/auto-parts stores - and in the case of this build particularly, that is genuine Land Rover Arles Blue which I had to get mixed [using the paint code LRC424], plus Land Rover Ivory for the roof as I recall. For the detailing [such as window rubbers] and painting drivers I tend to use Tamiya and Humbrol acrylics - the little pots - and fine brushes. Plus the rust effect is highlighted using one of the Tamiya dry-powder weathering kits.

Hi Mad-Bee - thank you! Sorry I don't have a group shot - and at the moment half my models [which I affectionately refer to as the 'Tamiya collective'] are still in transit between the UK and US... However, I do have the Defender and Desmond [HiLux truggy] already here in California, plus the Jeep YJ build is well underway now too - so when that is finished I'll endeavour to do a group shot with the three crawlers together at least.

Following on from that thought... since the Defender is blue, and I plan to paint the Jeep Chrysler [Stone] white, then perhaps I should repaint Desmond in Top-Gear red too, to keep things patriotic!
