Earliest Brat ever?
This is about a beautiful old Subaru Brat from Tamiya, as we have seen him hundreds of times before - although - the one shown here is not quite ordinary.
What looks like a 58038 Brat at first sight needs a closer look to notice some interesting differences:
First there are the rear motorplates milled from the full, then the rear drive shafts, which come along without the rubber cuffs. Furthermore, there is a complete different battery mount on the underside, which can't be found on any ORV chassis. Also the rear Bodymounts don't seem to fit properly on the chassis because there is no key slot drilled in the chassis yet.
The solution to the mystery is quickly explained: this is a pre-production model, as it was given by Tamiya to distributors for promotional purposes, and therefore has one or the other small difference to mass production.
I have been able to purchase several vehicles from our Tamiya archive, including this Brat. Funnily enough, I noticed the many differences during a closer inspection at a later time - actually I wanted to buy the car only because I liked the special 2-tone paint.

Great car! The battery mount was a common self made hop up from the spring parts of the front axle - the white pieces are part of the front axle damper mechanism. Very nice indeed !

Superb . Tamiya should have kept the solid gearbox side plates
