I like bringing used models back to life, even if sometimes it's not really worth money wise. This originally was not a good purchase. The kind of basket case project that's gonna cost you way more than buying one in good condition. This 959 was a wreck. The main chassis was broken in many places, all suspension arms and uprights were broken, glued and held together with metal pieces. The body was toast. The only good thing it had was the presence of 4 additional wheels and tires in OK condition, a working Technigold and some new body accessories. Over the years, I collected bits here and there and I was finally able to put it back together. It's far from perfect, but the chassis is now relatively sound.

Then it stayed like that for another couple of years before I found the motivation to tackle the body. It's a repro from TBG, which I think is quite good. With that kind of paintjob, you don't know where to start. At each step you have to really think about what comes next. I started by peeling part of the protection film in order to be able to stick the gold stripes on the sides. I think it was the right idea because it tells you exactly where to put the masking tape between the blue and white colors. Most of the black was painted inside, after everything else, by brush, using my trusty PC-5 jar. Shame they don't sell these anymore. Most other little details like front blinkers or the rear lights are painted by hand on the outside, with a brush using tamiya XF-colors. The curve of the rear light is pretty wrong, I messed up with the masking tape but I can live with that.

And now that I spent so long working on that repro body, I found an original one in mint condition that needs a new paintjob! Well, I'm probably gonna wait a few years before I tackle that! Until then, it's gonna sit happily on the shelf, never to see the road again.

Great resto and a worthwhile labor of love. Do did this 959 rightful justice and since we are unlikely to see a re-re don't worry about losing money on it. You gained a beautiful Tamiya legend!
