The Fox
This Fox was my go to car in the 1980's for all around fun driving and easy maintenance. It was sturdy and fast for the times and looked like a dream to a kid 10 in 1985. It wasn't my first or my last Tamiya kit, but it has been my longest running rc car to date. The patina in these photos remind me of the hours of fun it had in the 1980's. Except for the tech, oil, and grease inside running it now (in 2021) these are all original parts from when I first made it. I left the heat restores on for fun even though they're no longer needed.
These were two runner bodies I made back then and still use today. The black one was more of the shelf version and the blue one was for rougher drives. For context though, back then (for me) the only reason a kit was on the shelf was if something broke :)
I have a new unpainted body and decals that I'm thinking of doing something different with (when time allows), ~and what fun that Futaba Attack control system was.
If you liked those pictures, you should see these...

It's great that you still have this car, and that you've been rediscovering the hobby with your son building the Grasshopper together. I too still have my first car, The Boomerang, and I helped my son build his first proper RC car, the Grasshopper too! It's nice to be able to pass our interests onto our kids. My son is still a little too young to let him loose on my restored vintage cars though!

Ha ha! I know what you mean. It’s a little sad but I have to keep most of my Tamiya stuff out of view in an undisclosed location. It would be way to tempting for my four and eight year old to want to thrash them around. I can’t blame them either! Kits like my Wild Willy 1 and 959 rally are like catnip’s to 4-8 year olds Speaking of cats, our two cats also seem to like to chew on small wires: So It’s more like banker box Barron’s than shelf queens around here for now.
Our Grasshopper 2 is great fun though. I can’t help but cringe a little watching them accidentally bounce into things. Then I remember I learned the same way

Nice to see a car that is still with its original owner... and still looks good to be fair. I sadly no longer own my original super sabre and grasshopper 1 from my youth but do still own my blackfoot 1 ..... been stripped and repainted and repro decals and cleaned the chassis and electronics up and looks ace. Wouldn't run it now though don't trust my driving skills lol.

Thanks! Yes, somehow I have managed to hide these things away safely during the years I stepped away from the hobby. I still have my first and only Grasshopper 1 body and wheels, but the whereabouts of the rest is a mystery to me.
This Fox has always been a runner so I don't mind running it around with my son's Grasshopper 2 on the original wheels and tires. I do have some new shelf wheels and tires that make it almost look like shelfer. Without Ebay though I would feel a little more hesitant to run it. This 2WD buggy with it's enclosed chassis has proven to be very durable without a lot of parts to break.

So awesome that you've kept it, such great memories!
