While searching for some inspiration for some alternative colour schemes I came across the following links with hundreds of pictures:

I've selected just a small sample of pictures to illustrate where the Tamiya designers, including Yasuo Otsuka, drew inspiration - note the use of Sand Blaster tyres, perforated front bumper, black trim around the rear wheel arch, racing fuel cell, nitrous bottle and single seat etc.

Also, note how many of these body shells are fibreglass and do not have much in the way of surface detail - very much like the original 1983 model (namely no indentations for shovel and spade etc.)
