The idea for this tank came from 3 articles. Andrew Dextras' Tiger II -July 1945 over at missing-lynx.com, Painting Panzers by James Blackwell, also on missing-lynx, and Painting the MarderIII by Bob Oehler on Tamiya America site. Dextras' tiger provided the idea about the color for a late war King Tiger. Blackwell's article talks about Post Shading and weathering. Oehler's article talks about a super easy way to make rust.
The build for this tank was long but quite simple. Always use loc-tite on the screws and CA(not model glue) on the plastic parts. I've seen too many tanks loose bits, so strong glue is a must. The track tension unit is a pain - I might upgrade it at a later date.
Paint: Use metal primer on all metal parts. I find that a dark primer gives a pre-shade effect and a little depth to the base coat. I also used Dupli-coat primer becuase its very very thin. The base coat is done in AS-17(IJA-Green) <-- you might not find it in a hobby store, since it's part of Tamiya's aircraft line. AS-17 along with XF-13 -have a light grey/green shade to it. Camo spots were done with 80% XF-60 Desert Yellow and 20% White. All other painting were done per Tamiya's manual.
Weathering - Mixed 30% XF-1Flat Black, 30% XF-64 Red Brown, and 40% XF-13 JA-Green. Then I thinned it 30%paint -70% Thinner and airbrushed it along all trim and camo lines. Next 50% Desert Yellow, 25% Buff, and a mix of JA.green and flat base was mixed. Once again use a 30% paint - 70% thinner ratio and airbrush this in coats over the whole model. Keep the brush 6' away and build up coats. Along the base of the model move the brush to 3' to make a thicker line.
Rust: read the article at the Tamiya America -site. I then rusted my exhaust pipes, jack, and radio box per that article.
Can't wait to drive this thing.

You have done a great job on this tank. I especially like the rusted exhaust pipes
stulec52
that sounds like a lot of work in painting it.
But great result !!!
