This is a very simple way to make the XC suspension better, and allows the rear wheels to drop further than normal. Sammy was the brains behind this idea, but I thought it was so easy, and so effective, I just had to make it into a how to guide, and I don’t think he’ll mind.

To do this, you need to get hold of 2 juggernaut shocks. It’s possible to do this mod with standard shocks, but it’s worth the price, because they make a big difference. I got mine from Huffmeister, and he says he has 2 more.

The mod consists of swapping the balls at the top of the suspension with the screws at the bottom.

First, undo the ball at the top of the suspension. You can do this with the Tamiya box wrench, but it’s easier with a socket set, if you have access to one. If you don’t, you may need to take the mount off. If you do, be careful that you get the little ‘lump’ in the hole in the chassis, or the mount will wobble around.

Now undo the screw holding the shock onto the suspension. Be careful not to lose the washer. Now screw the ball into there. The box wrench just fits in, but again, a socket set would be better.

After you’ve fitted the ball, you can clip the bottom of the shock onto the ball. This is a problem when using standard shocks, but the juggernaut had ball joints here, so it should be no problem. If the shocks are used, it would be a good idea to apply some grease to help the shaft slide.

now screw the top of the shock into the old mounts, where the ball joints were. Job Done! Now put the wheels back on and test them. I tested the travel of the shocks with a ruler (a metal one that reflects the light of the flash ‘slap’).

As you can see in these pictures, the standard shocks didn’t drop much, only around 7cm. but with jugg ones, they go over 8cm, and they are much softer, so allows the wheel on one side to go up higher, and the other to drop down lower
