My third Tamiya, the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force light armored vehicle. I get the impression not many of you out there are keen on this, some say its ugly, suppose that’s why I got it cheap off the bay, are well... that leaves more for me. To be honest I like its look, just wish Tamiya had done an ABS instead of a Poly body. The problem with it being a poly is that it has a glossy finish when as we all know military vehicles tend to have a matt/flat finish. The fact that I've now built it ( Incidentally my 3rd car but my 1st build new out the box) and spent hours trying to trim body with out making a pigs ear of it, in my mind and heart this thing simply has to have a matt/flat finish. I haven't put stickers on yet nor removed the protective film, cant till I'm decided what it is exactly I'm going to do. My dilemma is that there is no Olive Drab poly specific spray paint available (not because of the Tamiya labeling problem but because there just doesn’t seem to be any), so I might risk giving it a coat or two of PS-1 White (on the outside obviously) and then a coat or two of TS-70 Olive Drab. Yes very unorthodox and risky but it simply must have the right finish. The paint idea I learnt from TC member f100sabre who’s done it (where do you think I got the idea from) and it looks brilliant, its a VW-Toureg chassis with a Chevy poly body on it, you must go and have a look in his showroom if you have not seen it.

Check picture 3 of my post, its a real one with camo minus the flag paint job. Big thanks goes to all who have replied to my paint/wheel glue forum posts, its helped clear some issues I knew nothing about. Thanks to f100sabre for thinking outside the box. If anybody else out there has any ideas, opinions or even criticisms please comment, I would enjoy reading them.

NIB Bearings and electrics for the build. A real one.

you can spray it on the outside to give a matt finish, or lightly rub with a scouring pad

I had one of these for awhile and I really think they look cool, I like you wish they had done it in ABS like the Hummer, it just seemed like they put no effort into it and its very short sales life seems to confirm that compared to the long selling Hummer. I have seen one that was superdetailed and painted on the outside and it looked killer, so it has real potential Tamiya just missed the bar on it a bit. I do love the look, Kyosho made one that actually looks like what Tamiya should have done with their half eight inferno chassis. Anyway it does look better than the Touareg even like this

I totally agree. It will be flying off the shelves if be ABS body, with lights and all. The real one in the last pic looks pretty cool , spray a camo scheme on the outside of body minus the flag

Yeah, that real reference pic you included proves Tamiya really missed with this one. Such a cool looking vehicle 1:1 but not so much with Tamiya's attempt. I've been thinking I'll still get one though.
