A beautiful boat that sails well in light and particularly in stronger winds. Well known as the ultimate scale yacht of all scale model rc yachts. The wide beam means it can ride heavier waters and wind than it's main seen as competitor- the Kyosho Seawind. The Seawind is faster in lighter winds and waters, but it's lack of volume and short rudder make it submarine more and steering is lost once heel and waves become too large. The only problem with the Yamaha as a regular runner is that the designed to be flexible keel was a poor idea (trying too hard to replicate 1:1 yacht) and it soon causes the hull to crack around the keel area. This is typically solved with some internal fibreglassing, but none the less a rigid keel would have prevented this from happening in the first place.
The main reason the Yamaha did not become as popular as the Seawind and other rc sail boats was the price - it was almost twice the price of the Kyosho. At 750 dollars it was OTT. However it is now a much sought after model since being discontinued.
Lovely yacht just eye wateringly expensive.
The sails are good quality and last longer than the Kyosho's, and the rudder is a perfect size for big winds. Hatch is reasonably waterproof but taping it in big winds is a good idea. Photos here of mine and a mates, and compared with the Kyosho.
